Ge Jia ethnic minority costume and textiles
The Ge Jia (Hakka) are classified as part of the Miao group in China, but have distinctive textile-making traditions. They are well-known amongst textile collectors for brilliantly colored, intricate embroidered designs on aprons and baby-carriers. Recently made copies of older pieces are relativley common, but authentic pieces made for local use like the ones shown here are scarce. Most Ge Jia embroidery is done on a batik foundation, as several of the pieces here show. In many baby carriers however the batik foundation is completely covered with embroidered designs.
Most of the embroidered panels from baby carriers shown here date from the period 1950-1970 approximately.
