Torana Tribal website: news and updates

May 2013

Several good Hainan Li items added including good Meifu, Ha and Run tubeskirts with fine decoration (see both pages 1 and 2 of the Hainan section). Also jackets from Nandan and Gao Por Miao peoples. I have also added a new page detailing my personal research interests and publications.

Created a Facebook page Art of Southeast Asia to showcase highlights from this website and other related material.

June 2011

A new page on textiles from Borneo (pua kumbu from the Iban group) has just been added.

Several rare and lovely Hainan Li minority tubeskirts have been added to the Li pages.

March 2011

A group of three very attractive Miao Nuo play masks added to the masks page, a good Bouyi silk supplementary weft textile with the water well design, plus a copy of the English edition of "Clothing and Ornaments of China's Miao People" to the books page: a now out of print and hard to find book that is an essential reference for collectors of Miao textiles.

January 2011

An embroidered scarf and jacket theme this month.

New items added include two good and old Yao wedding headscarves from Guangxi province, two 19th century Meifu Li wedding headscarves from Hainan Island, a very unusual Yi jacket and a nicely styled Miao jacket.

October 2010

Several Li minority items sold, a lovely (and rare) new Meifu Li ikat sarong added.

Update August 2010

Several Li skirts sold, an interesting small Run Li skirt added.

Update July 2010

See my ad in Hali magazine this month.

I now have a good number of excellent Meifu Li ikat skirts, there is one example on the first Li textiles page, other pieces available on request.

Second update June 2010

Just added: two superb masks, a new page with textile books.

Update May 2010

Since launching the site at the end of April, a total 26 textiles have been sold (thanks for the enthusiastic response!). Today I added more textiles and costumes, including:

A very old Miao embroidered jacket and skirt set from the Huaxi region

Two Dong minority blankets

Several relatively early Dai blankets from the Dehong region

An early Bouyei blanket with silk supplementary weft on cotton ground and two Bouyei baby carriers

A new section on Yao textiles, including some good shawls and some unusual pieces from Guangdong province.
